The original TaylorMade Spider arrived in 2008, according to clickgolf.co.uk, though golf.com reports it began life under a different name, the Monza Spider. Clickgolf.co.uk describes the design as built around a large, lightweight frame with perimeter weighting, calling it a high MOI design intended to deliver stability, and golf.com similarly frames the design intent as maximum stability and MOI. Reception was split from the start. Against the rest of the Spider line, this 2008 original is the one the record treats as the starting point, the version other entries and later Spider models, including the Tour Red with its Pure Roll insert and removed sightline described on TaylorMade's own product page, are measured against.
