The Record

Written from the sources it cites · machine-drafted for the Community to correct

The original TaylorMade Spider arrived in 2008, according to clickgolf.co.uk, though golf.com reports it began life under a different name, the Monza Spider. Clickgolf.co.uk describes the design as built around a large, lightweight frame with perimeter weighting, calling it a high MOI design intended to deliver stability, and golf.com similarly frames the design intent as maximum stability and MOI. Clickgolf.co.uk also points to the putter's distinctive "fangs" or "wings" at the rear of the head, describing their purpose as an additional stability and alignment aid.

Reception was split from the start. Clickgolf.co.uk called it ground breaking, saying the design "caught the attention of both amateur and professional golfers for its unique aesthetics and remarkable performance characteristics," and reported it as forgiving and stable even on off-centre hits. Golf.com's take was less generous on looks, noting it was a design a lot of people called "beyond ugly." Golf.com also reports that initial forecasts called for roughly 30000 putters, against first-year sales it puts at over 200000. Clickgolf.co.uk lists Sergio Garcia and Dustin Johnson among notable users, and mygolfway.com counts it among the company's top-selling putters of all time.

Against the rest of the Spider line, this 2008 original is the one the record treats as the starting point, the version other entries and later Spider models, including the Tour Red with its Pure Roll insert and removed sightline described on TaylorMade's own product page, are measured against. The maker's page prose available here speaks to that later Tour Red version rather than to this 2008 release directly, so the original's own voice on record comes largely through what clickgolf.co.uk and golf.com chose to say about it, not through TaylorMade's own words for this specific putter.
