Red X

The Red X line begins, on our record, in 2004. Scotty Cameron's own page traces the design back to early 2003, when he started working on two designs code-named the coupe and cabriolet, developed in response to Tour players asking for a traditional mallet. The maker's page describes a body kept simple in shape, paired with a premium precision milled German stainless steel insert bordered in elastomer to help shape the sound, and a single bend shaft for an unobstructed look at the ball.

The 2004 Red X carried a stainless steel body with that GSS insert, a 4 degree loft and 71 degree lie per the maker's specifications, and shipped at 33, 34, and 35 inch lengths with head weights scaled down as length increased. Custom lie adjustment of plus or minus 2 degrees and a Red Cameron Baby T grip were offered as options.

Reviewers responded to the shape and the sound more than anything else. Golf Clap praised the precision craftsmanship and superior performance. Golfbusinessnews.com pointed to how the look and feel instilled confidence at address. Thesandtrap.com called the way it putted superb, and noted three white lines on top of the head. Scotty Cameron's own site adds that he considered the Red X mallets among the best sounding designs he had made. Against that, at least one reviewer flagged the back of the putter as too thick to scoop the ball out of the hole, a criticism that sits alongside the praise rather than erasing it.
