Red X

The Red X arrived in 2004 as Scotty Cameron's answer to a request the maker's page says came from Tour players themselves, who were asking for a traditional mallet. According to scottycameron.com, work began in early 2003 under two code names, "coupe" and "cabriolet," with Cameron starting from the shape and working outward, experimenting with metals until the sound and feel matched what he wanted. The result, per the maker, is a stainless steel body paired with a precision milled German stainless steel insert bordered in elastomer, "which helps achieve the proper sound." The shaft was refined down to a single bend, chosen for what the maker's page calls a clear, unobstructed view of the ball. Loft is listed at 4°, lie at 71°, offset at 1/4 shaft, with head weights scaled to length: 350g at 33", 340g at 34", 330g at 35". Custom lie ran +/-2° and the custom grip option was the Red Cameron Baby T.

Cameron's own assessment of the finished putter is direct: "Scotty thinks that the Red X mallets produce some of the best sound of all of his designs." Editorial coverage largely echoed that confidence. Golf Clap called it "praised for its precision craftsmanship and superior performance," golfbusinessnews.com noted that "the look and feel of the Red X designs instils confidence at address," and thesandtrap.com summed up its performance in a word: "superb." Not every note was unqualified praise, though the Community's read of the design has also flagged the back of the putter as too thick to scoop a ball from the green, a practical gripe set against otherwise strong marks for feel and consistency.

Within its own line, the 2004 Red X reads as the originating model, the traditional mallet built from a Tour ask rather than a retrofit, with the GSS insert and elastomer border becoming the identifying signature that later Red X releases, including the 2008 version, would carry forward and restyle around.
