Studio Select Newport 2

The 2008 Studio Select Newport 2 is a completely milled putter, per scottycameron.com, built from precision milled 303 stainless steel with a new sole profile and factory interchangeable weights. The maker's page lists loft at 4 degrees and lie at 71 degrees, with lengths of 33", 34", and 35", full shaft offset, Cherry Dot graphics, and a choice of Black or Red Studio Design or Baby T grips. Custom loft and lie adjustment of plus or minus 2 degrees was available. 2ndswing.com's listing places the run across 2008 to 2011 across 13 models in the series.

Opinion on this release is split. 2ndswing.com called it one of Cameron's most successful lines, with a longer run than the typical Cameron design, and noted it remains in use on tour. best-putter.com took a cooler view, describing the feel as soft but dead or unresponsive and saying there's nothing negative to say about it, but leaving them a bit underwhelmed. best-putter.com also pointed to a slightly narrower flange from wider toe and heel weights and very little felt weight in the toe as part of that impression. Scottycameron.com, for its part, called it Scotty's most technologically advanced Newport 2 to date.

Against the rest of the Newport 2 line, later versions on scottycameron.com carry a 3.5 degree loft and 70 degree lie, both a touch different from the 4 degree loft and 71 degree lie recorded here for the 2008 Studio Select, and pair with a Matador Midsize grip rather than the Studio Design or Baby T options this release offered. Whether that shift in numbers and feel amounts to a meaningfully different putter is something the reader can weigh against best-putter.com's own ambivalence.
