Wolverine

The Wolverine name on our record spans two eras of Ping's mallet putters, the Sigma G generation and the Sigma 2 generation that followed. Golf Monthly described the Sigma G Wolverine as a mallet head, and it was this version that drew the line's most pointed reaction from that outlet.

On the Sigma G Wolverine, Golf Monthly's testers found the putter had a hollow feel and produced a very loud ping off the face, to the point where it didn't feel like we were using the premium golf ball we actually were, adding that this wasn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just something that might not be to every golfer's taste. That sound and feel became the defining note of the Sigma G edition in our files, a mallet that split opinion on acoustics rather than shape or line.

The Wolverine carried into the Sigma 2 generation as a modern style, large mallet, per Plugged In Golf, with long alignment lines enhanced by long, rectangular flanges. Where the Sigma G edition's record centers on how it sounded and felt at impact, the Sigma 2 edition's record centers on how it aims, a shift in what reviewers chose to focus on across the two releases rather than a resolved verdict on the line itself.
