The Classics Big Sur arrived in 1998 as an unusual entry in Scotty Cameron's catalog, a putter built specifically for players working with a longer, more pendulum-style stroke. The maker's page lists the design at 48 inches, well beyond a standard putter length, with 4° of loft and a 79.5° lie to suit that added shaft length. There is a conflicting spec elsewhere in the maker's own record, a 35 inch length with a lie of 71° and loft of 4.5°, which appears to belong to a different capture of the same archival entry rather than this one, so both figures are worth noting rather than picking a winner.

Construction-wise, the maker's page describes the head as heel/toe weighted and face balanced, built for what it calls "the perfect pendulum," with a triple rocker sole. The finish is described as a lustrous gun blue with one white sightline, a look distinct from the black oxide finish and white sightline that would later mark the 2001 version of the same model.

Within the Big Sur's own history, this 1998 Classics release reads as the original take on the concept before the head was reworked in 2002 for the Pro Platinum series and again in 2003 for Studio Stainless, both of which moved to a heel-shafted design with a stiffer single-bend shaft. The 1998 Big Sur predates that redesign, and the maker's own copy for it emphasizes the length and lie changes needed to accommodate a longer stroke rather than any change in shafting or sound.
