The PLD DS 72 arrived in 2022 as one of four models in Ping's PLD range that year, per golfmonthly.com's reporting. It's a face balanced mallet, built with what the publication described as a modern shape carrying hints of classic face balanced mallets, milled from premium forged 303 stainless steel with a Deep AMP aggressive milling pattern on the face. Golfmonthly.com also noted heel and toe weighting, a deep wide sole with gentle camber running from center to each side, and a straight double bend hosel.

Golfmonthly.com's review called it an excellent face balanced mallet that offers a good forgiveness and great feel from the milled forged steel head, and the wider Community note attached to this release echoes that on feel, alignment, and forgiveness, while also flagging that there's no offset hosel option and that the putter isn't particularly cheap. The alignment aid drew specific attention from golfmonthly.com, which described a long white alignment line on the trailing edge sitting in a slot about the same width as the golf ball, alongside a topline the publication called not too thick, meant to provide contrast alignment so the face reads square at address.

On fit and finish, golfmonthly.com pointed to a PP58 mid-size blackout grip with a flat front and pistol shape at the top, a stepless steel shaft, a Ping logo subtly colored in silver, and a white head cover included with the putter. As one of four PLD models released that year, the DS 72 sits within a range where the record so far speaks mainly through this one outlet's account of the head shape, milling, and alignment treatment.
