Metal-X

The Metal-X line launched in 2012 as a single event rather than a slow rollout. Editorial sources credit Austie Rollinson, Principal Designer for Odyssey Putters, with the design, and hagginoaks.com puts the tour introduction in early February, with 13 players said to have put various Metal-X models into play in their first week on the European Tour. Retail availability followed on April 13, per hagginoaks.com, and the line arrived all at once across a wide spread of head shapes and lengths: the Metal-X and Metal-X 2-Ball headline releases, the Metal-X #1, Metal-X Belly, Metal-X Long, Metal X Core, and Metal X Progressive D.A.R.T, plus a combined Belly and Long putters release and a Core grouping that swept in the #1, #6, #7, #8, #9, and Rossie heads.

The face technology was the thread running through all of it. Editorial descriptions from golfalot.com and prnewswire.com describe a milled-style face and a lightweight aluminum face, with mygolfway.com and hagginoaks.com adding that the aluminum face carried a urethane backer layer on the 2-Ball model. Odyssey's own later product pages, captured in 2014 for the Metal-X Milled #1 and #7, describe the mechanism in the company's own words: "Our guys in R&D put oval depressions in the face that maximize the mechanical lock with the golf ball dimples. This increases friction and creates a more controlled and consistent roll that you need to knock in more putts." The same pages describe an adjustable weight kit with 10g, 15g, and 20g options and a stabilizing crossbar, features that mark a later, milled iteration of the family distinct from the 2012 originals.

Belly and long options were built into the line from the start rather than added later. prnewswire.com's release language, echoed across the #1 and Core rows, notes the putters were "available in both Belly and Long putters" and "available in a Belly model," and dedicated Metal-X Belly and Metal-X Long releases carried their own listings, with hagginoaks.com and prnewswire.com pricing the Belly and Long models at 189 USD and the combined Belly and Long putters release also cited at that figure by hagginoaks.com, while mygolfway.com lists a separate international price table for the same release. The Metal-X #1 and the Core putters were priced lower, at 149 USD per hagginoaks.com.

Reception at launch, as gathered across outlets, centered almost entirely on feel and green interaction rather than on the milling's actual effect on roll. Chris Koske, Global Director of the Odyssey Business, was quoted across prnewswire.com, hagginoaks.com, and mygolfway.com saying "Every tour professional we have spoken to has told us not only how good the insert feels, but also about how the ball seems to hug the green." Independent commentary followed the same line: thehackersparadise.com's reviewer said of the 2-Ball, "I really liked the feel of the 2 Ball version of the Metal X during the THP Demo Day," and pluggedingolf.com called the launch "Innovative, practical, refreshing." But the Community's own notes on the Metal-X and Metal-X 2-Ball register some skepticism underneath the praise, with users noting it was uncertain whether the milling pattern actually improved roll at all, and that the middle ground feel it offered may not have been necessary in the first place.
