New 615
« on: September 17, 2018, 09:01:15 PM »
I had a thread about my first Byron Morgan putter which was an X-Proto and a great putter. I reluctantly sold it due to some loft lie adjustments I could not get fixed here. One of the courses recommended someone who could adjust the lie and loft. I had just picked up an old Newport which was way upright so I called him just after selling the X-Proto. The returned putter had marks on the face that required a re-finish. It was supposed to be adjusted to 70 but was 74.5 when returned and checked by a third party.   >:(
First, I am very happy I never found this guy for the X-Proto which he would have ruined. Anyway, the golf gods must be making this right because I just picked up a mint, plain, 615 (perfect specs for me) off the bay for an unbelievable price. So I had one putter almost ruined which I sold. Then another one I have been waiting for came my way. I've been drooling over a non-softened 615 which will be close to the X-Proto look minus the sound slot. I also wanted the wider top line just for a change since my 612 has a narrow one and softened. Today my wish came true.  :D

Nice story.  Hope the magic continues when you take the new blade out on the greens!!

Thanks, here is a picture of the putter, very plain but that's OK. I cannot get a tracking number but they assure me it's shipped. I have been messing with other putters but just came to the realization I putt best with a Byron Morgan putter.  :)

Here are some better pictures. I took it to the practice range and putted very well with this one and love the feel. I like the naked look.  :)

Thanks! It's not the fanciest putter in the world, but it putts and feels great.

I think less is more when it comes to good effective putter design.
These days golf retail stores are filled with a wide range of head shapes-colors-multiple alignment lines.
Mostly I believe that stuff is decoration to try and sell a "tech story". But in reality lots of the so called "tech" is distracting and counter productive to consistently good putting.

Clean putter congrats on the nice pickup. Looks like it may need a sightdot though based on your avatar pic

I am re-shafting it today with a putter lounge PVD black shaft. It's too short they way it came. I think I will leave it naked as is and see how I putt w/o the dot. I can add that at any time. I should know about where the sweet spot is and can hear it when I do.

Since my other putters from Byron just have the dot I know just about exactly where to put the ball and 100% agree on the cavity.  :)

I thought the 612 had the tri-sole, not the 615?

Other way around.  612 is rocker sole.  615 tri-plane.  Sometimes you'll also see tri-planes ground down into rocker soles, which I'm sure you could do on a 615.  Not sure I've ever heard of someone going from rocker to tri-plane, however...

I have never heard of a sole Byron could or would not make so this is all news to me. I don't have any problems putting with either style.

I may see if Byron can modify this putter with some changes and the Tai treatment. I PMed zman so we will see.
