I would agree Oil can is something special - not well suited to the UK climate though...

If I lived somewhere a bit drier / warmer.

Just need to keep up on the maintenance and protect it properly.  Pick up a can of CRC Food grade silicone, spray it after each round (or maybe before a round if it's damp outside), give it a good wipe, and it will give you a nice layer of protection from the elements.  Some puttertape on the sole will help too.
