Lajosi putter wins the VIC Open
« on: February 07, 2018, 03:02:37 AM »
Congratulations to Simon Hawkes- who won the VIC Open on the weekend.
He shot a course record 64 on the Saturday and backed it up with a very solid 68 on the Sunday to win
the championship in a playoff- sinking a real nice down hill 6 footer.
It was his first Tour win as a pro and will get him a 3 yr exemption on the Australasian tour- meaning he will
play in all our big tournaments and sits on top off the money list, which if he can finish top 3 will get him 3/4 starts
in the US and a bunch of starts in Asia- plus final round in the European qualify school.
Some past winners of the VIC open include - Gary Player, Greg Norman, Ian Baker Finch and Peter Thompson, so his name is now on the cup with some pretty handy golfers.

He came into my workshop just before Christmas wanting to give his putter a lie/loft check as he thought he was seeing too much of the face- he was right and I tweaked it back to spec and away he went playing the local pro am circuit- he has always had the ability to go low-  2 days after I finished his putter a few yrs back he sent me
email that said- "just shot 65 - this baby is staying in the bag"

Well done Simon- hope this win leads to a big future.

Kari

Awesome!!

That is the first DD 201 to win on tour Kari, yes?  The Victorian Open as well, brilliant!

Correct me if I am wrong please, I know that a KLP 4 and a KLP 7JS have won a couple of overseas national titles as well.

And a huge, "well done" to Simon too, great stuff!!

I watched this with interest. I met Simon when he spent some time at my previous golf club as one of the assistant pro's. He was always a nice fellow but I never realised he was this good. Well done Simon and well done Kari. It must a thrill to see something you created play a part in such a big achievement. Great stuff.

What model putter is that ?
Also, if you happen to know the putter's length, lie, loft, head weight etc... and if you don't mind sharing those specs, please do so.

You keep dropping putts and we'll keep watching.

This board has a few builders that have guys playing and winning, Luke List is another guy we are keeping track of with his Byron Morgan... and even without his Bettinardi, I personally have always been drawn to Matt Kuchar. On a slightly different scale, I also like to keep up with Zach Johnson and anyone gaming a SeeMore on tour.

Keep up the good work Simon!

Simon dropped into the workshop this morning- with the trophy!! -which was great.
We did a lie/loft check and tweaked his putter back to spec and finalized the details on his new DD201 GSS.
Now that he will be doing a fair bit overseas travelling I thought it would be good for him to have a back up.
I definitely get some pics up when she's done.

Is what Simon referred to as a "Didge Custom" the same head shape as a DD201 ?

The Didge is the 1st generation DD201- I have evolved the DD201 three times since the first Didge.

I read this thread but never commented. Might just give it a little bump.

It always great to have this connection with the putter & player. If I happen to see Simon at a WA event I’m pretty sure dropping Kari’s name will bring a smile to his face.

So a belated congratulations Simon & Kari.

Love the pic with the trophy!  ;D  ;D  ;D
