My Designed by Arnold Palmer
« on: February 21, 2012, 09:54:57 PM »
I'm new to vintage putters so i apologize in advance if this is the wrong place to ask...

My dad just gave me his old "Designed by Arnold Palmer" putter. He bought it new and used it until he gave up golf when I was born. He want's me to sell it, but I have no idea what it is worth. If I understand correctly, the DBAP precedes the 8802. What do I need to do to prove authenticity to potential buyers?

Thanks in advance for your help.

That is my favorite putter that I do not own.  If it has the original grip and shaft, it will get a decent amount of money.  Check ebay for completed listings.

If you send me pics, I might be able to make an offer.

I am planning on listing it on eBay, I've just heard that several putters on eBay are not original and I want to make sure that I photograph whatever is necessary to confirm authenticity. Here are the photo's I've taken so far.

@MarkCuranovic Thanks for the response. I'm not sure if that's an offer or just an appraisal. Either way I appreciate it.

Does anyone else have an idea of value. I've been told that these have often sold in the $1100-$1200 range.

Thanks Again,
Ryan

@manbearpig99 Thanks Chris for the info. I saw those auctions on eBay as well. I've also read on these forums that some of the eBay offerings are not all original and I'm sure that affects the price.

Seems like a wide variation in price range. What factors make one putter sell for $350 and another $1100?

Also, where is the best place to sell a collectible putter? Is eBay my best bet?

Thanks,
Ryan

Your putter.
Pro: Looks original, not rechromed
Face and topline don't look too mangled
Looks to be original grip

Con: no shaft band

If you validate that the end of the flare tip to the first step of the shaft is roughly 8-8.5" that will help.

I'd guess that one's in the $4-450 range without the band.  A good bidding war might net you $600.

A very nice putter.  Nice enough that it shows well, but not too nice that you would worry about having it in your golf bag.  I agree with Stage1350's estimates.  It is a very attractive putter and at least worth $400, but hard to see more than $600.  I'll repeat what I was told when I bought my first Designed By...  Wilson can make 8802's for as long as they want, but they can never make another Designed By Arnold Palmer.

For an individual, ebay is going to be your best bet to get a fair price if you are selling it.  Although the $850 in a dark alley is a pretty good offer too!

No selling here.  List it on ebay and post the link in that area.

Thread moved, re-named and edited accordingly.

@Stage1350 I'm not completely sure that I photographed the correct thing. Is this the right shot?

Thanks again to everyone for the insight!

That's the correct photo.  The replacement shafts have closer to a 6" first step.  The 8.5" first step is considered to have a softer feel.

The bad news is that the shaft band is a prized part of that putter.  Everything else looks good.   Average, expected wear on the buttcap, the leather and underlisting look to be original, and the head isn't dinged up more than you would expect for a 50 year old putter.

Personally, I'd clean and castor oil the leather to renourish it, find a good headcover that fits, and game it.  As long as you keep the bag chatter from getting worse, you can enjoy the feel of that club.  And the magic is in the feel, not the value.

That's what I want to do--I want to use it--especially since it was my dad's. But he's wanting me to sell it for him.

I'm going to look in his old golf bag and hope that the shaft band fell off/came off in the bag. Maybe it's lying in the bottom??

I still have and use my grandpa's (his dad's) old putter:)

Thanks again to everyone for the information and advice. I've now listed on eBay and put a link in the eBay section.

Wish me luck!
