Cleveland Classic Designed By question
« on: May 30, 2011, 11:56:41 PM »
Hey guys. I appreciate all the help I've gotten on here.

I'm beginning to collect 8802-style blades (as gamers only, of course) and just won this on Ebay. I was wondering if anyone had info on when this style of Cleveland was made. I know they also made a Crenshaw designed by. Total noob question I'm sure.

I'm pretty happy regardless for only $15 bucks, but I'm interested in the history of this Cleveland design. I can also take pics when I receive it since there isn't much to work with in the Ebay listing. And if the listing doesn't work I'll just put up the pics when I get it.

Thanks again.

It's one of the early models.  Later Designed by Cleveland models didn't have the "classic" on the sole.  This is a small letter model.  Not quite as desired as the large letter models, but still a great gamer.

What shaft band does it have on it?  (assuming you have received it already)

Bettinardi 110Cu BB2

I should receive it by the end of the week and I'll post pics. I'm pretty excited about it. When you say it's an early one, what years are we talking?

And yeah it'll be a nice gamer. It'll be a great backup to my Byron DBCM. I've fallen in love with 8802 style blades.

I am by no means an expert or anything, but this is the list of designed bys I have compiled so far... Materials info is from a "stage" post to someone else.

I need a BENI version still!

Materials:
Carbon steel (8620)
Manganese Bronze (same as Ping)
BeCu
Milled carbon steel (Crenshaw black)

The carbon, MnBr, and BeCu were all made in a small and large letter version.

Carbon steel putters were also available with a black melonite finish. I have also seen copper plated carbon steel Crenshaws as well.

SMALL LETTERING
Designed BY Classic - Black head Melonite - white lettering, red classic
Designed By Classic - head Manganese Bronze - white lettering, red classic
Designed By Classic - chrome head - black lettering, red classic
Designed By Classic - chrome head - white cleveland, black designed by, and classic
Designed by Classic - beryllium copper head - white lettering, red classic

Designed by Crenshaw - black head - white lettering, red crenshaw
*Designed by Crenshaw - chrome head - black lettering, red cleveland

Designed By - Gunmetal head - all white lettering
Designed By - Chrome head - black designed by, white cleveland

Wow. Thanks so much for that info. That helps a lot. Do you have a year range for them as well?

It arrived today and I took it out to the putting green. Hits so nice. I'm super stoked. And for only $15 I couldn't be happier. I've always wanted to own one of these. Matches nicely with my Byron Designed By. Now all I need is an actual 8802.
