Taylor Made TPA 18
« on: May 28, 2007, 01:36:44 PM »
Just picked one of these up for the princely sum of $12.00  :w00t:

Will post pics tonight..... For those who havent seen one, it's basically the inspiration for the del mar 3.5.  Faldo won a few biggies with the same design from Wilson.

Faldo isn't the only major winner who used a TPA 18. Scott Simspon won the 87 US Open with a TaylorMade TPA 18.

Nice pick-up.  I have been wanting to try this style of putter for a long time.  Have rolled some with the XG-9, but hate the XG insert.

Didn't the Wilson TPA series come before the TM versions, meaning that TM possibly bought the rights to the TPA line?

The TM version was out first, there was some kind of battle (according to a Wilson golf rep I played golf with in the early 90s) between Wilson and TM, Wilson won.  After the switch to Wilson,  a mint TaylorMade TPA 18 sold for $200 - $300 (in the early 90's), and a new Wilson TPA 18 could be had for about $70.  The TM ones were more valuable because Faldo used a TM model, even though he was sponsored by Wilson.

Wilson bought the rights because Faldo (Wilson staffer) was winning big with it.

Looks a lot more like an XG #9 than a Del Mar 3.5...

I wish Byron would make one in the TPA 18 style, with the shaft in the hosel and a ferrule.

After using my 006 for 3 weeks now, I have to agree 100% ! imagine if he made it in carbon steel,in either black oxide or oil can, it would be a seller!
