Introducing the "Dale Head 89"
« on: November 24, 2008, 03:03:08 PM »
Sometime a summer or two ago, Byron and I got to talking about old putters, and he mentioned that one of his favorite designs was his original "Dale Head" that he started making back in 1989. It was cast in Magnesium Bronze with a milled face, but he always liked the lines.

Over time, we talked about bringing back some older designs, and I finally convinced him to send me the blueprints for the putter sometime last summer. We talked about them, and what he'd change on a more modern adaptation, and that was all I'd thought of it for a while...

Fast-forward to a strange email I get on July 2nd...

How's this look so far?

My jaw about hit the floor...

I ran over to reflog74's office. "You have to see this..."

He HAD to make this putter, and it needed to be a special "20th Anniversary" release. I sent him an email that just said "DaleHead 89?" to which he replied "I love the name."

The next day Byron and I talked on the phone for quite a while about the putter, and doing a special release for his 20th Anniversary. Here is the concept I came up with for release, and the engraving...

89 putters to be released - All of them numbered
39 Soft Carbon
39 Stainless Steel
11 Solid Copper
Each would have a special Headcover and Grip.
The copper would ONLY be sold as a set with the other two.

Here is the concept that I came up with for the headcover...kind of like a cross between an x-ray and a blueprint.

It turned out that AM&E couldn't stitch the letters as small as I'd designed, so we made a few changes to the putter AND the headcover to make them match.

Hand blued, first off, and on the way to you!

With the birth of Oliver, and Garrett's 2nd birthday, I'd almost completely forgotten about the DH89...and all of the sudden, one was on my doorstep. (I'm still wondering how Byron got the Post Office to deliver mail on Sunday...)

I monkeyed around with it for a few days, made a few suggestions, and he was back to the mill to make a few changes.

So 2 weeks ago...just in time for the snow to start falling in Cleveland, I get the final putter in the mail. (On a Tuesday this time...)

I took these real quick just now...my camera was stolen last week, so I'll have to take better ones when it's replaced.

 :w00t:

So just to be sure...do you have to buy these putters in Sets of either 3 (Stainless/Copper/Carbon) or 2 (Stainless and Carbon)?

Or can you buy one at a time, etc.?

So you get 3 putters for $1,500?  Wow, that seems like a bargain compared to some others I've seen recently!   ::)

I'll bet that copper one would look sweet after several months of gaming.  :)

anyway, these are AMAZING!  congrats on the 20 year anniversary!

absolutely stunning!  Damn, if I only had the cash!  Great pieces of work.  And the headcovers are incredible, great design, very interesting.  Any thoughts of coming out with a similar headcover as a production model?

Special thanks to Doug for all his work on this putter.  The concept of the putter, the head cover and the engraving.  Doug loves putters and can come to California and be President of Byron Golf Design anytime he wants.

Excuse my ignorance as I am new to putter world. What is the difference between Dale 89 and Byron's 007 models? I can see that it has rounder bumpers and a little thicker topline.

I guess Dale 89's designed after Scottsdale/009 in mind and 007 model is designed after Anser2/Newport2?
