I believe the options for carbon head putters are as follows:

Black oxide- polished, brushed, or matte

Oil Can -      polished, brushed, or matte
Copper plate-       polished, brushed, matte
*for copper plate, polished is shiny, brushed is consistent, matte is blotchy, pre-patina is blotchy.
Blue Oil- …...polished, brushed, or matte

The options for stainless heads are as folows::

Glass Blast-
Brushed -
Polished -

Blue Oil - tint done with heat treatment …..polished, brushed, or  matte

Deep Water- black colored PVD treatment
Mystic -        multi colored  PVD treatment

I have read here at this forum that  Deep Water (black colored PVD treatment) is "maintenance free".

cool, thanks!  what is "PVD"?
I have a GSS DH89 glass blast which I absolutely love, and was considering getting a dark version, but would want something maintenance free like the glass blast.

If you want something dark and maintenance free go for the Deep Water.
If you want something light colored and maintenance free go for the Brushed Stainless.

A little after the fact but when I was researching finishes I looked closely at PVD.

My recollection is that PVD is a specific coating method (more than a plating like nickel etc) and one of the most durable dark finishes on stainless.

I would assume you would only coat ASS rather than GSS for the extra you pay for it.

And after sharing that I re-read the OP's topic title and it's about carbon finishes so please disregard if you're not thinking stainless at all.

I remember a thread from a couple years back where a newer member was trying to put together a list of options for the finishes to make selection a bit easier.

Not sure if these are still accurate but will paste below;

Ok, someone tell me if this is correct on the available finish options for the DH89 (I'm only comparing Carbon and American Stainless because one of these two would be the one that I would order):

  CARBON ONLY
  Black Oxide
  Oil Can

  AVAILABLE FOR BOTH
  Blue Oil
  Black PVD
  Copper Plated
  Matte Black
  Mystic Pearl
  Gold

  STAINLESS ONLY
  Torched Bronze
  High Polished
  Brushed
  Tour Satin
  Glass Blast
  Cole Star

What metal does the dark brown finish go with (or what some call Captain Morgan's Rum or Dark Rum)?

I have a copper plated carbon DH89. Went from shiny to full patina quickly. A few rounds and a trip to the practice green or two. 2 weeks maybe? No need for silly patina formulas.

I'd say the patina took in about 4 - 6 weeks of play (about 8 rounds).  I did nothing special to the putter to accelerate the patina.  Living and playing in Colorado allows us to be closer to the sun so the intensity is greater.
