Testing new finish on a Masonboro, "Copper Strike".
« on: September 22, 2010, 11:56:09 PM »
Here are some quick pictures of a new finish that is being tested at the Sunset Beach Custom Garage,  ;).  It is a three-stage process that is sealed at the third stage by an incredibly durable clear, satin finish.
Let us know what you think and we'll keep you guys informed with the results.
Thanks,
LaMont in AZ

That's a great looking finish Lamont!  How's the maintenance on it?

LaMont, looks like an oil can with none of the maintenance thanks to the satin coat. I might have an idea on a finish for my first SSB!

With that clear satin coat, maintenance should be zero.  I am testing this one as my gamer to see just how durable that clear coat is.  From past use as a protective layer on my white polymer finishes, I am confident that it will hold up incredibly well.
Thanks,

That looks pretty sweet.  That looks like a finish from some time ago that I saw your brother post somewhere along the way.  He said you could do it again, but glad to hear that it will be coated in clear to prevent maintenance and usual wear and tear.

If the clear coat has the effect I am hoping for, we should be "golden", so to speak.
Thanks,

That finish does look nice. Like someone said earlier, an oil can without the maintenace. Got to love that.

Hey LaMont, can the clear satin coat go on the black oxide you are doing for my Black Isle?

The prep involved with the clear coat would prevent it from being used on your Black Isle, in its new finish.  The base needs to be blasted or coated with a material that gives the clear something to "cling" to.
With your Black Isle being polished, the clear would not adhere well and I would be afraid that we'd have peeling or flaking issues.
Sorry for that news,

I know this is an old thread but just wondering if there are any more of these heads out there LaMont?
Love this headshape!
BTW, how did the clear coat hold up?

I believe that I do have some of these heads still in a box, under the counter.  I made one recently for an "Inspired By Kevin Kisner" putter.  He won his first tour event and the first time a putter that I had been a part of won an event, at the 2010 Mylan Classic.  From the very beginning, I thought it was the Myland Classic and thus, the putter is stamped as such.......oops.
Fire me a note via PM or email at lamont@mannkrafted.com and we can open some discussion on building one of these rascals.
Great heads, we just didn't have the engine behind us for marketing.

I believe with all of my heart that the product we sold at Sunset Beach was on par with anything on the market, at the time.  Before we stopped, we had 100% USA Milled heads, one of the best welders and the pricing was spot-on.
In the real world, timing is everything and we just missed by a hair.
Love to see that some of the SSB heads are still getting solid feedback and use.

PS, the logo that we had, RIGHT before we shut down was going to be a huge hit.  Maybe I should dig it up and do a small retro run for the guys who still remember that SSB was doing it old school and doing it right.

I would go for that.  I have been ogling over Rob's for a long time.  Love the softer bumpers, but not too round like a Dalehead.....

Ripple,
Hang in there.  I have two blocks laid out for Calabash/GunSlinger heads that will be MannMade hand made pieces.  If I can get the shape dialed in, there is a good chance of turning this into a CNC-based head in the coming months.  I have always been a fan of that shape and with my new CNC guy, small batches make a lot of things possible.
Stay tuned here and over in my MannKrafted section for new things to come.
Thanks guys,
LaMont in AZ
