  • looks good on you, though.
Nice read!  I have #29 of the Barn Find's.  Just a beautiful putter.  Your Tour Classic is equally as impressive!

Tad

Thanks for the great review.  I would agree that the 99.9% pure copper is a softer material.  This is one reason for my using the beautiful mokume material in the Barn Finds.  The guy that makes the material does a wonderful job for me.
I don't have very many of these great blades still in my shop.  I have a few a very few of the Lamkins.  I used these for years and bought them by the 100's at a time.  I was sad to see them stop making them. i prefer the stitching on the back as well as the feel and I sent one a few months ago the the people at Best Grips.  Thanks again and i am committed to making the very best putters for everyone.

Wow.  I was pleased to see that Kyle was happy with this review.  But to get feedback from the man himself?  Outstanding!

The Tour Classic has the longest tenure of any putter in my collection.  Some are older, like the Designed by Arnold Palmer, but this hasn't left me for over 10 years.

Nice review.  I also like your ideas for adding weight.  I usually just layer lead tape on the sole, but in some cases it takes quite a bit to get the weight up on older putters.  I may experiment with your ideas in the future.  Thanks.
You have to be realistic about putting, and accept the fact that you're probably never going to putt as well as you think you ought to.  --Jack Nicklaus

Tad

When I was on tour and Phil was still using his 8802 style he layed tons of tape on the top of the flange as he was using the putter very short at 31 to 33 inch?  Not sure but short.  this is how he did the added weight.  he said it felt better this way and the ball rolled better.  Tad

Brad your review a few years ago was the reason I sought and found a mint Tour Classic last year. After carpet putting with it a few times I knew I had to find a Barn Find. At the time Tad had a few BF's remaining, but by the time I was ready to pull the trigger, they were out of stock. Recently I finally found my Barn Find and hopefully my Bucket List is complete. (but I know that is probably not the case).
My intentions were to collect these and not game them because they are just too beautiful, scare, etc. to risk the elemants outdoors or banging around in my trunk.

I had known about Tad's Tour Classics and heard of the Barn Finds before your review, but it was so well written and deatiled... well I just had to have them. Thank you.

I game a 33" Custom Buit G1002 Fit, carbon steel, chomed 8802 style which I placed ganular sugar down the entire shaft. I like to feel the weight of the club through out the entire club, essencially doubling the weight of the shaft which seems to slow down my tempo. Best lag putting 8802/Napa style I have ever used. The putter head is the spitten image of a 60's 8802 I have when placed side to side. Meets the nickel test etc. Being the 8802 style expert that you are do you know anything about the Custom Built G1002 Fit, circa, or anything about the company. Only marking is like a sole pressed medalian. I think it may be a cast forged head, no milling markings?

I now have a BF, Tour Classic, Majic 88, A Nickel plate silver inserted BF xxx. I dont think there are any more of this style by tad that I don't have. I preferred these to hoffman blade. The copper "feels" the best, the BF with mokume looks the best and the BF nickel with silver insert putts the best.

Weakputt!!!

It is your fault that I am here. I purchased a putter from you on EBay, we had some conversation, and you pointed me to this place... I can't thank you enough. This is a great site and I have added more than a few putters to my collection. One of my favorites in the collection is a center shafted Tad Moore named Character... it is a beautiful carbon and aluminum combination that is (and likely will always be) the only putter in my collection that is big bodied. It isn't really a mallet as much as a big flanged head. LaMonte did the white coating and it is one of my favorite pieces to show to people. It is a treat to own a stick made and gamed by the master himself!

Sorry to hi-jack the thread, but it is good to see weakputt's alias pop up.

Evan,

I'd argue that you putt best with the nickel Barn Find due to the LLRC underlisting and Neumann Calfskin grip.  But given how you were putting with the thinner gripped copper Napa, I'd just say that this milling style suits you.  It's duplicated by the 1995-96 Napas, the BB2s, and the TD42.

Brad,

Yeah thanks for adding those to my collection!  I have all the the styles you listed except a true bb2 ( I have the bc7 and an ss6, but no bb2). The cheapest ones i have seen have been the older copper insert models. Any experience with them?

Cheers,
Evan

This is a great thread and thanks to all your comments.  I have recently started making heads here in Selma.  No "classic" heads yet as I am trying to design how we will make them.  The original heads were fusion welded and then milled by Bob.  We did the grind and bend and may think what i did was far better then any of the other milled 8802 in shape.  I will be developing a way to Tig weld the heads.  Soon i hope.  Here is my latest.

Tad,
I like the new stuff your doing.
The "Classic" style heads are by far my personal favorite of the modern 8802 styles with Gene Nead's 8802 a close 2nd (mostly because is was so different than what anyone else had done with the shape).

Cheers,
Evan

I figured it out... I was the guy that stole the Nicklaus/Bettinardi with the fluted shaft from you off of ebay... I think I sent you a Slazenger BeCu putter to look into, and as a guilty kind of motion on my part for getting the Nicklaus so cheaply. I still have bad feelings about it, so if you ever decide you want it back for what little I paid as my winning bid, shoot me a message and we'll send her back your way.

Oh ya. Don't feel guilty. The Nicklaus - Bettinardi is a fine Zing style head. Not many poeple knew about them and that is the reason she went cheap, not because it happened to go to you. I have actually had two of them in the past, but not a real Zing kind-a-guy. I do like the fact that the Nicklaus Company was seriously thinking about getting into the higher end putters at the time with RJB, but I believe instead Jack continued on with his buddy Chuck Long.
The Slazenger is a fine example of KC titanium goose fit hosel Sante Fe type putters, but not as desirable as a collectable as it should be and I passed it on to the wife because she likes the look. She thanks you very much.

I have two Barn finds left in the nickel finish.  I will be putting them up on Ebay.  One is a head that was traded back to me.  nickel head with soft stainless face.  The second is the last of the mis stamped heads i did with nickel finish and soft stainless face.
I have said i will make a new 8802 and I do plan that.  It is a tough putter for me to make because i do not have the volume or money of a Cameron or Bettinardi. The barn finds were done as a fusion welded head and you need quantity to do this.  Keep your eyes out for my new one.  It will be in the Spring.  Tad

Great to hear tad, I know its early in the game but will it have an insert? If so it will have a place along side my barn find, classic, majic88, and nickel barn find.

Pure copper with your patented face.
Tad Moore leather grip, maybe in the same shape as your corded "Tad" grip.
Another run of the famous Tad Moore Nippon shaft.
