Definitely a 006, not a 615. You can tell by the square neck (615's have a softer DH89/612 style neck) and the 'ears' in the pocket.

GSS or ASS I'm not sure.

Seriously? Tour Issue, Newport2 Prototype, GSS? Looked at past sales, seems all this guy sells is "tour" equipment.

Just wrote and asked the following, lets see what response if any I get.

"This appears to be a Byron Morgan 006, not a Newport2, furthermore I don't think Byron ever made a GSS 006. Do you have any documentation which states in fact it has been tour issued or is made of GSS.

Thank You"

It IS a great looking putter tho!!!

The fact that he has called it a Newport 2 tells me everything I need to know.

Plus he is one of these guys on the Bay that has Tour or Tour Van or something in their name implying that they have 'special' access to the good stuff.

Being down here in Sydney I have had to buy almost all my putters from the secondary market including eBay over the years and have developed a good 'nose' as the wine people say. There is something a bit smelly about this seller.

Byron made 006s in GSS for the Asian market, about 50 putters, IIRC. Was lucky enough to get one stamped 350GSS. I don't know if every one was stamped GSS though. The whole GSS stamping thing was unsettled back then.

Educate me,

Is there a way to be able to tell the difference between GSS and "regular" stainless steel? As far as I know they are identical in hardness and composition, only difference is, one is made in Germany.

Thanks!

T.J.

P.S. Anyone know? Now am curious !

TJ

I don't know of any way a lay person can differentiate between GSS and SS. Both are 303 stainless steel. IIRC, I once read that GSS may have a tad more chromium(?) than SS, but not enough to change the classification. Don't know if this is true or not.

Most German SS putters have some marking on them.. A few don`t.. We are doing a blank GSS in copper plate right now

A friend of mine who is a metallurgist assures me that in a Brinell test (a scale used to judge the hardness of various metals) GSS is actually harder than normal old 303 stainless - so much for the 'soft' feel. I was always under the impression that GSS was just normal 303 anyway but manufactured in a particular place in Germany. To be honest, I can never tell the diffirence anyway - guess I'm a Philistine!  :)

I think you need to sandpaper your finger tips Rob, maybe start with 120 and finish with 2000. then you will be able to tell the difference...... LOL

Not sure I can tell the difference either but I do know they finish different when torching, I can get much brighter more HD colors out of GSS
