BOS FINISHED - Spalding TP Mills TPM 7 & TPM 16
« on: January 30, 2010, 09:57:41 PM »
I practiced on a TPM 3 so I could feel comfortable when I refinished the TPM 7 & 16.  As badly as I hate to admitt it, the TPM 3 took all of the wind out of my sails.  It was the toughest and most difficult head I have ever worked on.  So I decided to send the 7 & 16 to Black Oxside Service and let the pros do it.  The 7 was a carbon steel head and torched up real nice.  Turns out that the 16 was a stainless steel and my options were limited.  But they both turned out well.

Both look great! You should have kept both in house though...the 3 you did turned out sweet!

Sorry to pull up an old topic, but wondering what you mean by torched up?  Did you torch the carbon steel and if so, how/what method?  I've seen people do this to stainless heads all the time but never carbon steel.  Thanks.  :)

You can torch carbon and get some real nice colors out of it. Problem becomes maintanance. If torched then oil canned maintanance is reduced but some of the brighter hues (purples & blues) are also less visible.

Interesting.  If I apply a cold blue then torch, what kind of effect does that have?

I would torch then blue...If a light cold blue is done the coloration will be muted but still visible. If done in reverse the blue reacts to the high heat and you'll get a funky brownish foggy/hazy look

Always.  I have a couple on GWRX, but this would definitely be my first time torching.
