Complicated: In Need of Help; Please Read
« on: June 23, 2017, 11:14:50 PM »
I've made a request of someone that has come to fruition: I would like an 8802/Napa style head made-- but the maker says they would like to work from something that has already been at least started.  I assume the maker has made this request because they typically do not make putters and could prove complicated when getting a standard hozel.  My initial thought was a carbon Del Mar that could be ground down.  Is that possible to get to a friendly 340g while having a 8802/Napa look?

What would work?

Thanks ahead,
Miles

Buy a Black Lab BL-B head.  But you might as well let Chip do the work.

That's a thought.  It's hard for me not to follow through with this producer though.  I clearly know nothing about producing putters myself by asking such a question, but I do know Chip makes some sexy putters.  Wonder if he has any really rough BL-B's  that he'd let go of to get worked on.

Hello Miles, some good advice from Stage right there.

If however, you are intent on going down the original route, I would look for a beater in Carbon on eBay in the shape you suggested (Da Kine, Delmar etc). This sounds like a leap of faith job, so you don't want to be too out of pocket initially.

STRONG +1 on this.

It's not uncommon to have a puttermaker source their billets and even rough millings from another CNC firm.  The one question I have is why is he tasking you with this?  He probably has better connections and should be able to source a head easier than you could.

I have got back to you Miles and will talk tmro. I am no toolmaker but I think you will have to start out with a blade head. Most mallets have cavities and some even removable weights which will probably leave you something less than 300g after the work.
