By the way, there were no original 1964 8802's that were left handed.

I just acquired one of these "portsider" 80's remakes myself. Small spot of wear/rust on the sole at the heel but otherwise spin-n-span. Same "Head Speed" with 8-1/4" first step. Mine has the stock leather-look vinyl black grip.

It strokes real nice on carpet, haven't had it out of the house yet though. Hard to beat the balance and heft of these 8802's no matter what the era.

If you want something that putts more like the 1964 8802 or Designed By Arnold Palmer you should try to find a left handed Cleveland Designed By. I have found the Cleveland the closest to the real thing in feel. I much prefer it over the later remakes by Wilson.

Wow, that is cool. I know Wilson made this putter for Royal, identical to the 8802 or AP, but it had a star for a site line. I don't recall it having that stamping on the sole and I've never seen one in copper. The shaft is early 60's for sure and assuming it's not a marriage it would make it from that era.

i am new to this message board.....

i have a modest collection of Arnold Palmer putters including a DBAP and the earlier Arnold Palmer Wilson...........and i am generally familiar with most of the putters with nexus in the Palmer / Wilson period of affiliation.......

most of my putter purchases have been either locally or on EBay.........

there is a current EBay auction which offers a Palmer / Wilson putter i have not seen previously seen or come across .......i don't know how to copy and attach a picture herewith, but if anyone has the time to take a look at current auction # 230795319886 and can offer a bit of background on this putter, i'd be very appreciative.........my inclination is that this particular model was not originally a pro-line club, but rather one which was made for broader distribution (and at a lower price) thru sporting goods retailers, dept stores, etc........

any help or advice someone might be able to offer would be sincerely appreciated.........thanks......bruce@plumetail.com

Wilson 8802 shaft sticker:

In reading through most of the 8802 threads I get the impression that the original 64 has the green pyramid shaft sticker. Did the 64 come with the green sticker only???

After all this time thinking mine was an original 64 I'm all parotid that's it's not. Mine has the gold and black sticker. What the hell??

Can you post some pics of the putter from the toe? Also, does it pass the nickle test? If it doesn't have the right shaftband, it isn't all original. However there is a chance you have a '64 head reshafted with a later shaft.

So I've had the putter listed on Ebay for a few weeks and someone just messaged me that the shaft label is a dead giveaway for it being a 1980's remake. Is that true? There is no mention of a gold and black shaft label in bryandlewis ID guide. I don't want to falsely represent the putter so any help as to what period it might be from would be helpful. I had always assumed that it was early 60's from the grip butt cap, the grip itself, nickel face test and the scripting of the "o" of the Wilson on the sole.

Shaft band is definitely from a later year. The stamping also suggests what the other person told you. The W stamp was originally flat on the right side as seen in the guide. The color looks off as well which would leave to it being a later year model.

If "The Wilson" is all in red, is it an original? 8802 is all black with the first 8 being slightly darker.

The stamp and grip are what really give away an original. The original grip is no longer legal under the rules of golf and was very distinct. The stamoing of Wilson on an original is what gives most of them away. The right side of W was almost a mistake so it is not as clean as later years. The head size being a nickel was done is later years, and the shaft was also used for many of the later reproductions as well.

A couple of questions relating to the 1964 8802 and the nickel-faced 1990 model:

First, are the identifying marks on the bottom of the 1990 model different from the markings on the 1964 model? Does anyone have a clear photo of the bottom of the 1990 model?

Second, did later models of the 1964 8802 increase in weight between their introduction in 1964 and the issuance of the black 1970's model? For instance, did the later nickel face 1964 model start to increase in height in the toe area prior to 1970?

There were other Wilson 8802 lefty models like the "RM edition" that fetched a bit more however with the newest version now offered in left hand and Stainless steel it is less rare. Very few showed up in auctions in lefty over the years and few with the condition of your. You still have a nice putter here and one of the first 8802 made for us lefty's.

I wish the 1963-1964 Designed by AP came was made in LH for that is the Prize to have!!

My not so educated guess is that you have a ‘64 head with original shaft and grip.
